Old Barn & Windmill

Posted by B. Thomas (Arlington, Texas, United States) on 10 June 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

On my recent "girl trip" to Fredericksburg as we were driving along some back roads we passed this weathered old barn and a windmill. Whoa, back up...

The windmill is a Texas icon, and though now most of them often do little more than look picturesque, they are good at doing that. Windmills remain a favorite subject of painters and photographers and people who like their scenery spiced with a touch of romance. Windmills represent a blast from the past, suggesting the primitive and isolated way of life that settlers lived.

I'm told there is even a windmill museum in Lubbock, Texas.

Hidalgo from Herunen, Finland

You documented a piece of history so nicely here. Very lovely photo which can be admired for long time.

@Hidalgo: Thanks so much.

Lee from Fort Frances Ontario, Canada

A nicely framed shot. There is something about windmills that people enjoy. Thank you for sharing.

@Lee: Thanks. At first I was sorry I could not get closer to the barn, but I decided I like the framing from there.

Eleftheria from Athens, Greece

What a beautiful composition!

@Eleftheria: Thank you. Glad you like it even if it is not one of my cats. ;-)

Evelyn from United States

Aaah, to fall asleep to the sound of a windmill turning in the wind - one of my sweetest childhood memories

10 Jun 2009 4:40pm

@Evelyn: Hey Evelyn, I'm impressed you can remember that far back. Ha, ha. (To everyone else, we are friends, and she was with me when I took this shot, so I can joke. )

Shahryar from Isfahan, Iran

What a beautiful place :)

@Shahryar: Thanks. This was another "stop the car!" shot. ;-)

john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United States

Marvelous capture. Love the natural framing. I love windmills.

10 Jun 2009 6:46pm

@john4jack: Me too. I was happy with the natural framing on this shot too, so thanks for the comment!

Graham Russon from Cape Town, South Africa

Fantastic composition and the natural framing is brilliant. Nice work.

@Graham Russon: Thanks. I guess if the weed had been taller I would have had to get on top of the car to get the shot. ;-)

Lambspun from Madison, Maine, United States

Definitely a "Whoa....back up" shot! I love these old style windmills. We just had one torn down in the field next to ours. We were so upset that the never asked us first if we might want it. All it needed was a little fixing...someone with guts to climb up it once in a while and service it. With the cost of electricity in our rural town it would have been worth it for our farm!

11 Jun 2009 12:35am

@Lambspun: Thanks. Oh, I wish you could have saved it. What a waste.

Shiva from Kajang, Malaysia

Hello Thomas! Thanks for dropping by... Texas! Where my heroes come from.. SRV, Eric Johnson, Reverend Horton Heat!

:)

@Shiva: Don't laugh, but I had go Google two of these. SRV I got.

Scott Schilling from San Martin, United States

Great shot - thanks for backing up! I also really like the foreground elements with the barbed wire fencing! Great!

11 Jun 2009 1:13am

@Scott Schilling: Thanks Scott. I liked the framing elements, and thought the barbed wire went with the barn, but was afraid the barn and windmill might be too far away. I took several, and liked this one best after all.

John from Eureka, United States

My daughter ,grandchildren and son-in law live in a small town in Missouri. I pass many barns and windmills on the way to visit them from the St. Louis area.I was in Fort worth last year and took a lot of interesting photos, especially in the "Stockyards". Keep recording the past it will pass too soon. I enjoyed viewing this photo.

11 Jun 2009 4:24am

@John: Hey, thanks. Old barns are pretty cool, and there sure aren't as many around any more. I need to get over the the Stockyards for some photos again one of these days. And the good food too!

Evelyn from United States

nice little flock of sheep there by the barn....

12 Jun 2009 7:43pm

@Evelyn: Yep, they are pretty hard to see in this shot.
