Spring Time in the Rockies

Posted by
B. Thomas (Arlington, Texas, United States) on 31 May 2009 in Landscape & Rural.

At 14,259 feet Longs Peak is one of the 53 "fourteeners" in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. It is named after Major Stephen Long, who explored the area in the 1820s.

On May 31, 2005, an image of Longs Peak was chosen as the design for the Colorado state quarter.

There is officially no apostrophe in the name, although a number of Colorado residents continue to object to this ruling by the Board on Geographic Names.

Mountain week starting today.

*I wish I could say I got this shot after a grueling hike, but it was actually from a parking lot in the town of Estes Park, so they are probably not native trees. I had to work to avoid cars and light poles in this shot.
