Happy July 4th!!

Posted by
B. Thomas (Arlington, Texas, United States) on 4 July 2009 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

Independence Day is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays.

In the United States, Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, picnics, concerts, baseball games, and various other public and private events celebrating the history and traditions of the United States.

We plan to celebrate with a cook out, Texas Rangers baseball game, and fireworks. Here is a patriotic hummingbird wishing everyone everywhere a Happy 4th!!

America the Beautiful

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Viewfinder from Bradenton, FL, United States

You really put together a humdinger of a 4th shot here! But I must favor the Rays, Florida homeboys, y'know. Happy Independence Day, my friend.

4 Jul 2009 7:06pm

@Viewfinder: LOL, a "humdinger" of a hummingbird shot - good one! Thanks. I'm not a serious baseball fan - just like the junk food and people watching. I cheered the Rays for you when they scored, though. ;-)

No wonder this got a Spotlight...lovely! Some background to the 4th July...I used to have an American friend, no longer with us, who was involved in the advertising business here, very successfully. Each year he would celebrate 4th July in his own special way....inviting lots of people over for breakfast starting at 7am, of: Black Velvet to start (champagne and stout), lots of it, very delicious. The food he would prepare himself as he was a great cook and, at one time, had a restaurant here too. Such things as hamhocks and beans, pecan pie, corn bread and so on. He was a lovely, quiet man, not the usual blustery advertising types. I miss him! ^_^
