Little Stinkers

Posted by
B. Thomas (Arlington, Texas, United States) on 15 June 2010 in Animal & Insect.

In the Spirit of Silly Tuesday...

Three baby skunks showed up in the field behind our house one night. I couldn't resist a photo or two, but I sure was hoping mother skunk was not close by. I was not brave enough to get down low for a better point of view, in case I had to make a fast get away. ;-)

Barbara from Oakland, United States

Oh, I had triplets like this in my backyard one summer. Great catch! Don't you want to just cuddle them? I have read that their scent glands do not work till they are older!

15 Jun 2010 5:49am

@Barbara: They would jump at me and twitch their tails, until I tossed a handful or cat food, then they totally forgot about me!

The Big Guy from Regina, Canada

This reminds me of the saying "Its all good until someone chips a tooth!!!" Cuddly now but not so much later!!! Photograph them while you can!!!

15 Jun 2010 5:59am

@The Big Guy: Not so much later is right! ;-)

Satvik from Columbus, United States

wow, this is a brave shot ! I have never seen a skunk so close...great capture !
Happy ST !

15 Jun 2010 6:04am

@Satvik: They are harmless at this age. ;-)

Vinod from Bangalore, India

Oh cute ones...

15 Jun 2010 6:06am

@Vinod: Yes, they are!

Magda from Vancouver, Canada

Happy ST! It's better to see them on the photo than in real life! lol

15 Jun 2010 6:48am

@Magda: I think you are right!

Linerberry from Christchurch, New Zealand

Hehehe hahah they look like little brushes with eyes lol!!! What a great shot for ST! Happy ST!

15 Jun 2010 8:38am

@Linerberry: Thanks. Happy ST to you also.

Ronnie 2¢ from Atlantic Shores, United Kingdom

They look in good shape . . very bright-eyed ! Brave shot, I'd say, Tuesday or not.

15 Jun 2010 9:04am

@Ronnie 2¢: I think I was safe while they were so young.

Tamara from Aarschot, Belgium

Lovely capture ! Cute little babies :) Are they aggressive ? Maybe the mother is when you get close to her babies of course... Which is normal. Have a nice day Barbara :)

15 Jun 2010 9:15am

@Tamara: I think the mother would have been aggressive, but the babies are pretty harmless. Thanks, you too.

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

You are way braver that I would be in this situation Barbara! Well seen and captured! Happy ST! ;-)

15 Jun 2010 11:33am

@Eric Cousineau: I was ready to run if mom showed up. ;-)

Tracy from La Selva Beach, United States

!!!!! they are adorable, but I'm with you. this POV is just what is needed!!!

15 Jun 2010 2:32pm

@Tracy: I would have rather been down at eye level, but was afraid mom would show up, and there I would be, at "spray" level. ;-)

john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United States

Happy ST!!

15 Jun 2010 3:17pm

@john4jack: Thanks, Jack.

Scott F. Schilling from San Martin, United States

Dear Barbara, This could be very dangerous, this is worse than walking through cold rivers or standing on cliff edges! Very risky photography - but I guess you have to do it to get the shot! Great work!

15 Jun 2010 3:56pm

@Scott F. Schilling: LOL, well, I didn't do what I needed to do to get the shot, but I was afraid if I got down low, I might not get away fast enough. It was dark, and I didn't know where the mother was. I'm actually more comfortable with the rivers and cliff edges. ;-)

Judy from Brooksville, Florida, United States

Adorable shot ... and a safe POV! :D

15 Jun 2010 6:43pm

@Judy: Or a cowardly POV. ;-)

Sandy Weston from Madison, Maine, United States

Little stinkers is right! They are cute though aren't they! Have done these kind of things too.... ;)

15 Jun 2010 8:40pm

@Sandy Weston: They really are so cute. I wanted to pet them. ;-)

15 Jun 2010 11:23pm

LauraS from Chico, United States

Ha, ha, great share brave one! Cute trio.

15 Jun 2010 11:40pm

@LauraS: Thanks. LOL

Wild Mustang Photography from Carlisle, United States

Love them! I used to take care of them in wildlife care at Ma. Audubon! We fed them dog kibble, veggies and a mouse, dead of course! Sometimes meal worms! Yum!

16 Jun 2010 12:51am

@Wild Mustang Photography: Cool. I gave these a little cat food treat to keep them interested while I fired off a few flash shots.

MK from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

they r cute little things, how dare u to be scared of them

16 Jun 2010 3:28am

@MK: I was only scared of their mother, and what she could do to me! ;-)

SOUL AFLAME from The bosom of Mother Nature, United Kingdom

What a great shot. I've never seen them in the flesh, but would love to, such amazing little creatures. I think I'd be on the ground with a lens as close as I dare, hoping that they, or mum doesn't take a dislike to me! Great capture, Barbara.

16 Jun 2010 3:59am

@SOUL AFLAME: I wanted to be on the ground with the lens in their little faces, but it was dark and I had no idea where mom might be, so I fired off a couple of flash shots, and got the heck out of Dodge. ;-) Thanks!

Tim from Ft. Worth, United States
