Protecting the Young

Posted by
B. Thomas (Arlington, Texas, United States) on 26 November 2011 in Animal & Insect.

After a gestation period of 9 to 9½ months, reddish-brown calves are born in late April and May. Calves can keep up with the herds about 2–3 hours after birth and are well protected by their mothers and other members of the herd. Even so, some are killed by wolves and grizzly bears.

I guess you have seen enough Buffalo (Bison) for now. ;-)

@J.R.: You are so bad! (Actually I've had one, and they are pretty good.)

I guess one of Nature's babies that doen't make us go "Awww" is the buffy baby, but this is a nice frame and I go "aw" anyway. Look at the Lupin gently tickling baby's face.

So nice to see a baby included in the series, Barbara. Amazing that they can move with the herd so soon after birth. Nice to see the lupin close by, too. Very nice.

There are some of us who will never tire of these bison images! This baby is protected by its dad and the beautiful lupin. Your images have been informational and educational; thank you, and this is a winner!

@Judy aka L@dybug: Thanks, Judy. We saw some much younger babies that were still light brown. I liked this one resting in the lupin.

Bill Brown from California, United States

Spectacular capture! If this is the last one, you sure finished with a winner.

@Bill Brown: Thanks, Bill.

This is very nice, too. There is a sheen to the one standing up which is a nice effect. And including those blue flowers is a nice touch. I am enjoying this series very much!!!
