Going to the Sun

Posted by
B. Thomas (Arlington, Texas, United States) on 16 January 2012 in Landscape & Rural.

Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park has to be one of the most scenic drives in the U.S. but is not for the faint of heart. Up above the road you can see Highline Trail, one of the premiere hiking trails in Glacier National Park. The Highline Trail begins at Logan Pass on the Going-to-the- Sun Road and then runs north, following the Continental Divide.

I rarely ride without a helmet, but always do when doing the going to the sun road. It is a bit of heaven going up into the sky and the scenery is awesome, and the feeling of freedom is powerful. I've driven this road many times and hiked the trail a couple times. Great place, and nice photo.

This is awesome, Barbara! Is this the spot where you had them stopping the car every 20 feet?? Beautiful!

I always disliked roads like this as a child but now I appreciate them. The views are spectacular, just like this image, from them.

Wow! What a stunning view that you've captured here! The sunlight highlights great textures while also casting nice shadows.

Nice composition. I like how the knife-edged ridge angles into the frame. So, is this kind of a scary drive? I have yet to see GNP, as I have probably mentioned before.

@Julie L. Brown: We love being in the mountains, and don't mind the drive, but some people think it's very scary with the huge drop off along many of the roads. I hope you make it to GNP sometime.

amazing photo...i had the priviledge of being there a few years ago and was terrified driving up as Id never been so close to the edge of a road with a vertical drop and NO SAFETY BARRICADES! On reaching the top and talking to locals we discovered every year there are multiple fatalities of pushbike riders who overshoot corners on the way down and they dont have wings. GREAT photo and thanks for bringing it back to me.

@A journey: I think they may have been messing with you. There is a short wall along the most dangerous places. I have never seen or heard anything about bike riders going over. That would surly make the news! A man on a motorcycle died in July in a "slow speed, multi-vehicle accident" but that was not on the high or steep part of the road. In any case, Glacier is such a beautiful park, isn't it!?

Catching up ... I am amazed at how little snow you have left in this image ... not sure what time of year it was taken.
I drove up to Logan Pass ... always happier in the driver's seat than the passenger's on road like this. *grin
Glacier is an awesome place!

Oh yeah, I've heard of this road. A friend and family were on this road a few years ago. Her description was told while she was a bit wide-eyed, even though they all survived it ok and they all did remember the spectacular scenery. Obviously a memorable experience! Apparently the glaciers are melting rapidly so the idea is go there before they are gone.
