In the Spirit of Silly Tuesday...
Who says these locks are bear-proof? Not so much!

This is the same bear I posted here last Tuesday that was dumpster diving at Bear Lake. I watched him swat the "bear-proof" latch, open the door, and come out with a bag of trash. He seemed to be rather proud of himself.

I like your term, dumpster diving. I hate to see these bear getting use to human food, its bad news.

7 Aug 2012 5:43am

@Jerry: Yes, it is. The park rangers do their best to run them off before they become "problem" bears.

Doug from Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom

An incredible capture, but such a shame we impinge on their environment

I hope you had your bear-bells on ... and do you have any concerns about hiking up into their territory?

7 Aug 2012 12:27pm

@Judy aka L@dybug: In 40 years of hiking in Rocky Mt. Nat. Park, we have never encountered a bear until this June. Glacier and Yellowstone is a different story, and we do worry about the grizzlies there. There have been several studies that conclude that bear bells are not effective and could even attract a curious bear. The safest way to go is to carry bear-spray and know how to use it.

do you suppose they watch people open the door and do what they see us do?? Next they will learn to drive and start stealing cars....

A fine action shot showing the success of this bear in coping with the efforts of man to keep him out.

With the bear standing there on his hind legs, I couldn't help but think that this was a man in a bear costume. :-) I love how he's looking back as if checking to see if he will get caught. Great ST contribution!

Bears can get about anywhere or enter any places...always a shot

Japanalia from Yokohama, Japan

Once they learn the way to the garbage bin...I don't think there's much to do...Unless they are handled by the expert agency and transported far away, that is relocation....Even in Japan there've been sightings of bears next to villages or small towns. But wild boars and monkeys are by far more here than bears...
