Watched a cicada coming out of it's shell one morning. Cicadas are commonly referred to as locusts. They usually come out of their shell at night, here, but this one must have been running late. While they hang around waiting for their wings to dry out, there is more danger of being picked off by a bird in the daytime.

@Joyce: Yes. They crawl up from the ground, usually at night and hang on to something. The shell splits and he comes out, but has to hang around until his wings unfold and dry before he can fly.
