Shell Shocked

Posted by
B. Thomas (Arlington, Texas, United States) on 24 August 2013 in Animal & Insect.

Watched a cicada coming out of it's shell one morning. Cicadas are commonly referred to as locusts. They usually come out of their shell at night, here, but this one must have been running late. While they hang around waiting for their wings to dry out, there is more danger of being picked off by a bird in the daytime.

Fantastic shot, but why do these creature give my 'goosebumps'?
I guess it has to do with the stories of swarms of them. ;(

Joyce from Montana, United States

Everybody says it all above. I don't quite get it Barbara however. Is the left side body just a shell of the creature on the right?

30 Aug 2013 2:08pm

@Joyce: Yes. They crawl up from the ground, usually at night and hang on to something. The shell splits and he comes out, but has to hang around until his wings unfold and dry before he can fly.

Hilde V. Morin from Portland, Oregon, United States
