Humming Bird Banding - 4

Posted by
B. Thomas (Arlington, Texas, United States) on 25 January 2014 in Animal & Insect.

Humming Bird Festival in September, Rockport, Texas

The birds were very calm and didn't seem to mind the banding process at all. We never saw one struggle to get away.

I was lucky to get to release one of the newly banded humming birds. After this humming bird was banded, the licensed bander, who is holding it in this photo, carefully placed it in my open hand. It was very calm and stayed there looking around briefly before it flew away.

Wow, how many people get to hold one of these little birds, and release it?!!

A 2011 video of the process that I found on youtube:

Very beautiful hummingbird and so very tiny in this hand; and very wonderful you got to hold one; I'm surprised it was calm :) Great series.

I know they weigh so little ... was there any sensation of weight when it was in your palm?
It had to have been a real thrill!

@Judy aka L@dybug: It was so cool! I guess it was like having a leaf or a feather on my palm. I could not feel him at all.

What a thrill Barbara! The feel is so soft and warm isn't it? I held a rescued bird in my hand. He was stunned, but then woke up and flew. It felt so marvelous, miraculous.
