Apache Plumes

Posted by
B. Thomas (Arlington, Texas, United States) on 26 June 2014 in Plant & Nature.

Going from the wide view to a close up in Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, NM. There were a few trees and plants and I loved the Fallugia which is known by the common names Apache plume.

Tiny, deeply cleft leaves are topped by a profusion of exotic seed heads, "Apache Plumes". These rather thick shrubs appear unkempt, but in full flower their white petals are attractive against the dark foliage. Fruit clusters with feathery, purplish tails said to resemble Apache headdress.

I like their name ! We do not have such flowers in France. They seem so fragile...
Bonne journée, amitiés.

Super shot. This is a fascinating plant that I saw with flowers and plumes but not on the same individual. I thought they were two different plants until I called Sunset Crater National Monument and the folks there set me straight.
