The elk or wapiti is one of the largest species within the deer family in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America. Males engage in ritualized mating behaviors during the rut, including posturing, antler wrestling (sparring), and bugling, a loud series of vocalizations which establishes dominance over other males and attracts females.
This large male is standing at the edge of his harem of females to be sure no other males challenge him. There is a small stand of aspen trees in the background.
Hear the elk bugling in Rocky Mountain National Park in this YouTube video, and see the elk rut in progress. It is quiet a show each fall in the park with males rounding up females, and challenging other males.
