Hawk Feathers

Posted by
B. Thomas (Arlington, Texas, United States) on 26 March 2018 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

It was a pretty day and I was working in the yard when I found two red-tailed hawk feathers. I see hawks often flying over the field behind our house.

Birds periodically discard and replace their feathers in a process called molting. During the process, birds will look mottled or ragged, making positive identification difficult.

Lovely simplicity. Nice that you know that they came from the red tailed hawks. We have hawks that perch on trees overlooking meadow, but we haven't been able to ID them. But, they are fun to watch.

@Anita: It took a long time and research. There is also the Cooper's hawk and they are not easy to identify from a distance.
