Orton Effect

Posted by
B. Thomas (Arlington, Texas, United States) on 30 August 2018 in Plant & Nature.

The Orton Effect is a technique that was developed by Michael Orton in the 1980s and remains one of the most popular post-processing techniques today. While the technique has evolved since its first appearance, the core concept remains the same: create a dreamlike glow to an image.

Great photo with this effect. I don't use as much as I used to, although I did on last photo.
Usually I fade the effect so much it almost appears I never used it. I find sometimes it also
prpvides clarity and a lighting change.

I used to get a quite authentic looking oil painting brush stroke effect in the dark room using a sheet of glass covered in vaseline and painting it guided by the projected image before sliding the paper underneath and exposing it. An alternative for a soft shot is stretched nylons :)

@grouser: Ahh, the darkroom. Those were the days. Any nylons - those were the days too. The bad ol' days. ;-)
