Aspen is a deciduous tree native to cooler areas of North America, one of several species referred to by the common name aspen. It is often called quaking aspen.
When the leaves of quaking aspens turn yellow in the fall, a slight breeze can turn a stand of trees into quivering gold. Quaking aspens "quake" because of the way the leaves are attached. Each heart-shaped leaf is attached to the petiole (leaf stem), which is in turn attached to the branch.
