Thundering Surf

Posted by
B. Thomas (Arlington, Texas, United States) on 19 April 2019 in Landscape & Rural.

Impressive Rialto Beach is located on the Pacific Ocean in Washington state. It is in Olympic National Park near the mouth of the Quillayute River, and is composed of an ocean beach and coastal forest.

This beach did not have the mild surf I have usually seen or even just "big" waves. Those waves were thundering on to the shore, often carrying huge driftwood logs. This first beach we visited was a great introduction to the wild beaches of the Olympic Peninsula.

A beautiful shot of the surf. Years ago, I went on some winter hikes on the coast. When the tide was high, you had to time your run across the narrow beach with the rhythm of the pounding logs. Scary!

@Steve Rice: Wow, just scrambling over the logs to get to the water was bad enough.
