Some Things Never Change...

In the spirit of Silly Tuesday...

The first authorized teacher was paid $70 a month while her male counterparts received $80 per month. Wait... what?? So teachers were underpaid, AND women made less back then too!? Some things never change!

The modest school played a significant role in the Fruita community. Built in 1896, this one room schoolhouse was Fruita’s only public structure. It served as a church meeting house, since Fruita’s Mormon settlers never had their own church building. It also was the community center. The desks could be moved to make room for dances, meetings, church gatherings, and other social events.

This modest school with the scent of yesteryear is touching because it reminds people of my generation of the schools that looked a bit like them when we were children. Very nice picture

I so love that you are showing this pic. It looks bigger with this pic than it did from the outside. Imagine that stove being the only heat in the cold weather.

A superb composition inside the classroom. It’s something that still meets resistance here too it’s incredible. it is the work done which must be paid not "by whom it is done"...!

It seems that some things remain. I never realized that gender matters to how much one can earn.

@sherri: That is true. I have an old journal of my mother's in which she writes that she and my dad had to keep their engagement secret until the end of the school year when she was an 18 year old teacher or she would have lost her job.

Neat shot of the interior. I remember desks like that from the one room country school I attended.

The Amish here in Pennsylvania educate their "scholars" in one-room schoolhouses such as this one.
